It is a medium-sized plant which grows to an average height of 1.5–2.5 m, with a dense crown of up to 20 leaves. The leaves are pinnate, with up to 90 leaflets, and are grey-green in color. The leaflets are stiff and leathery, with a fuzzy coating of fine hairs. The petioles are covered in spines. The trunk is covered in a thick, fibrous layer of dead leaves, giving it the common name of cardboard palm. It produces an egg-shaped, yellowish-brown cone. The fruit is a reddish-brown drupe, containing a single seed.
