Care Instructions

Pithecellobium dulce, or Madras Thorn, is an evergreen tree native to tropical regions. It is a fast-growing tree that can reach up to 25 feet in height. It is popular as an ornamental tree and for its edible fruits.

Caring for your Pithecellobium dulce tree is relatively easy. It prefers full sun, however, it can tolerate partial shade. It should be planted in well-drained soil, and watered regularly in the first few years until established. Once established, it only needs supplemental watering during periods of drought. Pruning is not necessary, however, you may want to trim away dead or damaged branches.

Fertilizing your Madras Thorn is essential for healthy growth. Feed your tree in the spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer. Be sure not to over-fertilize, as this can cause leaf burn.

Pithecellobium dulce is susceptible to pests and diseases. Keep an eye out for common pests such as scale, mealybugs, and aphids. If you notice any signs of disease, treat it promptly with a fungicide.
